The last Rugby World Cup Sevens was held in Dubai in 2009.. Congratulations to Wales who won in a day of upsets by beating Argentina 19-12 in the final. Previous Sevens RWC Sevens winners have been England in 1993, Fiji in 1997, New Zealand in 2001 and Fiji again 2005.
The host country for the next Sevens Rugby World Cup has not been decided yet but there are plenty of great Sevens Tournaments around the world every year before then. For the best atmosphere, try the Hong Kong or Wellington Sevens tournaments. Sevens amy also be included in the Olympic games in future. This decision is currenly being considered.
It is just possible that 2009 will be the last Rugby World Cup Sevens Tournament held. Playing pressure on teams and the inclusion as an Olympic event in 2016 mean that this may replace the World Cup for Sevens. Read a full Hong Kong Standard article about this here. However, as Sevens Rugby has now been excluded as an event in the 2012 Olympics (it may be included in 2016), perhaps there will be a Sevens Rugby World Cup in 2013 after all?
